Using tags

Set up tags for use across your site, then tag your blog posts so they'll be easier to find.

Setting up tags

Tags are created from the Control Panel and can then be used across your Firefly site. Tags are created by Firefly administrators. Tag groups are created first and then individual tags within the group. Tag groups are associated with different areas of schools life and make it quick for teachers to tag their posts with relevant topics.

  1. Open the Control Panel.
  2. In the Structure tab, select Manage tags.
  3. Select Add Tag Group.
  4. Enter the name of your new group, e.g. Physics.
  5. Select Add Tag Group to save. Tag groups can be edited and deleted from this window.
  6. Select Add Tag.
  7. Enter the name of your new tag.
  8. Choose a tag group from the drop-down. If left as Not in any group, the tag will appear in the list of Other tags supplied when posts are tagged.
  9. Select Add Tag to save.

Adding tags to a post

  1. Select the post you want to tag.
  2. Scroll to the bottom of the post and select Add tags.
  3. Select all relevant tags from the lists on the right side of the Tag page window.
  4. When you're done, select Tag page to save. Your post will now be associated with those tags for easy navigation and searching by theme. If you don't see the tags you want, they may need to be enabled for the whole site. See above for instructions.
  5. Navigate to tagged posts. Your blog homepage will display a list of tags on the right hand side and the number of posts associated with that tag. The links take you to a feed of all posts related to that tag. Each post also displays its tags and links to a feed of all related posts.

Why use tags?


Using a few, simple tags can help you categorise blog posts. For example, in a match reports blog, you might tag "win" and "lose" to keep account of results across the season. For lesson notes in a blog, tags could separate notes into different modules.


More specific tags can be used to highlight key points in a blog and make them easy to return to in future. If a blog for Physics mentions the Higgs Boson in passing rather than as the main topic, the tag Higgs would keep track of that post and group it together with all other posts that mention the Higgs Boson.

Reinforcing key themes

Asking students to tag their own blogs, especially in their Personal Pages, can help them reflect on and emphasise important points they've written about. It might be a blog for self-assessment or, with younger students, a school diary, in which tags are based on school themes for that term or the key qualities you're promoting. Tags would give continuity to the students' records and their development. It also allows them to search easily back through their records at the end of the year.

It's good to limit the number of tags you set up in order to promote selective groupings of key information, rather than random labelling.
